FAQs

Q. How do I see my user record (checkouts, holds, etc.)?
A.

Go to the library catalog. At the upper right hand corner you will see a box asking for user ID and pin number. Your user ID is the barcode on your student ID. Your password the first time you log in is “changeme”. Once logged in you will be able to view account information, change your password, etc.

Q. How do I log into the Library VPN (virtual private network) to access journal articles from home?
A. Go to https://libsearch.rsu.edu and log in with the username “sdfirstlastname” and password of your birthday as “mmddyyyy”, or the password you changed it to after your first login. This is the same username and password you use if you visit the computer labs on campus.

Q. How do I find a book in the catalog?
A. Go to the library catalog. At the top center of the screen you will see the words “Search Library Catalog” with a search box underneath them. Type in your title, author, subject, etc. and hit go! (for more detailed searching, click the “advanced search” link below the search box).

Q. How do I find a particular journal article for an assignment?
A. First, check with your instructor to find out if she has placed the article on reserve. If so, come by the library or email/call us and we will get you what you need. If the article you need is not on reserve, go to the “search for journal articles” section of the library catalog (below the catalog search box), and type in the title of the JOURNAL you are looking for (not the article). When you click the search button, the system will tell you whether we have that title in print or online. You can then click on the links to be taken to a search page in the database where you can search within that particular journal for the article you need.

Q. How can I check out an item if I can’t come to the library?
A.

Easy as 1-2-3!

  • Call the library at 918-43-7716 or 918-343-7719, or email Sarah Clark at sclark@rsu.edu.
  • Have the title of the book/article ready.
  • Books will be checked out to your account and sent via UPS.
  • Articles can be emailed, faxed, or sent via UPS.
  • Allow 24-48 hours plus shipping time for items sent via mail (same-day service for faxed/emailed articles if request is received by 12:00 pm Central Time, otherwise next business day).

Q. How do I research a topic using the library’s online resources?
A.
  • Books: Search the library catalog for authors, titles, subjects, and other terms you’re interested in. You can easily limit searches by publication date/format of item (book, CD, etc.) by selecting the advanced search option.
  • Journal Articles: log into the databases via the Library VPN or the database link on the library homepage (if on campus), and search by one or more subjects, keywords, authors, titles, or other search categories (see database help files for details on each database)
  • Web Resources: visit our Useful Websites page to see a list of reliable websites on various topics. Feel free to ask a librarian if you need a second opinion on the reliability of a website’s information.
  • Resource guides: Take a look at our resource guides to find some of the best reference materials we have on various topics. We also have resource guides for specific assignments you may encounter in Comp. 1 or other classes.
  • Government documents: go to the Government documents website to see our online government resources. For more information on using government documents, please contact Carolyn Gutierrez at 343-7786 or via email.

Q. What if the library doesn’t have what I need?
A.

As a member of the OCLC Interlibrary loan (ILL) network, we have access to over 100 million books and journal articles from libraries around the world. If it’s in print, we can almost certainly get it for you!

To request an item on ILL:

  • visit the library
  • contact Jan Ferris, Serials/ILL Librarian at 918-343-7720 or jferris@rsu.edu
  • fill out our online Interlibrary Loan request form (see the “how do I” section of links on the left side of the library catalog page)

Allow 10 business days for delivery. ILL items can be picked up at the library or sent directly to your home on request (allow for additional shipping time)

Q. I have more questions—what do I do?
A.

If you are trying to find more information on a topic, or are having problems using or connecting to a library resource, contact Sarah Clark between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00p.m., Monday through Friday. If you need immediate help outside those hours, call the library front desk at 918-343-7716 any time the library is open.

Note: RSU has limited technical support on evenings and weekends, so you may have to wait for the next business day before a connectivity problem can be addressed. Thanks for your patience!
