Department of Biology

Boy in biology lab using a test tube. The Department of Biology provides students a diverse and multidisciplinary curriculum in the swiftly expanding fields of:

  • molecular biology
  • environmental-natural resource sciences
  • bourgeoning health industry

Our degrees were developed to provide a multidisciplinary education that spans a broad range of experiences necessary to build skills to be competitive for post-graduation experience in professional programs and related careers.

Our programs feature a unique curriculum that emphasizes genetics, chemistry, and physics, but rely heavily on a diverse combination of traditional laboratory and empirically based components of the biological sciences. Additionally, the department offers an Associate in Science-Biological Science for students wishing to prepare for their bachelor’s studies.

The Department of Biology has nine full time faculty members, who, together, have a wide range of biological expertise. With more than 150 students majoring in biology, the department offers a variety of courses each semester, with options for students to take directed studies courses and internships. Class size is small, with between 20 and 40 students in each course.

Throughout their course of study, students will participate in a variety of lab work and field experiences. Each student plans and executes a research project during their junior/senior year working closely with their faculty mentor during the process.
